Keeping the “small” in small business
Judging from the business books I’ve read lately, there seems to be an assumption that everybody who starts a small business wants it to grow big. What I’ve seen in the community, however, tells me this isn’t true. Most people who start a small business do so for other reasons, and simply want to grow big enough to survive comfortably.
I believe that our society needs to embrace the idea of a small business that wants to stay small. Growth for the sake of growing isn’t meaningful — it becomes a numbers game, a competition to see who can get the biggest share of resources and customers. …
