Process Improvement

A business process consists of a group of logically related tasks that use the resources of an organization to provide defined results in support of the organization’s objectives.

Taking a customer order, moving it through a plant, distributing requirements through a manufacturing or warehouse, and collecting all the pieces again for shipping – that process alone can have thirty or forty steps to it.

Processes are at the heart of an organization’s ability to do what they say they do. For example, a software business cannot succeed without a proven, effective process for defining customer requirements, getting developers to code those features, and packaging the software for release. A business’ growth is limited by how effective and efficient their processes have become, and whether those processes are easy or complicated for employees to follow. The concept of “creating systems” in a business to allow easy duplication and scalability is based on good processes – automating or systematizing a bad process is a fast route to failure.

We are passionate (some might say obsessed) about understanding business processes and helping clients find ways to improve and document them. We prioritize teaching employees about process improvement so that they are knowledgeable and empowered to transform their processes by using the skills long after we’ve left your office.

Some of the tools we use in process improvement include:

  • Value chain analysis (using Michael Porter’s Value Chain model)
  • Process mapping (aka flowcharting using either big chart paper & markers, or the more high-tech Microsoft Visio)
  • Root cause analysis
  • Creative problem solving models
  • Good old-fashioned curiosity and common sense.

If you’re considering making changes to software that you use to run any aspect of your business, starting with a process flowchart is a wise decision. When you want to train new employees, or improve the efficiency of your existing crew, then process mapping is a great place to start. It combines an analytical approach with visual language, and that can help people learn and understand your business better.
